Notes
From The Heart
"During the past four years, two dear family members, an aunt and my mother, have been residents at Sentry Hill, one in assisted living and the other in the dementia unit. Needless to say, my involvement with the facility has been constant and all encompassing.
Mere words cannot begin to express the dedication and love that I have witnessed from the staff to the residents on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
The challenges of the dementia unit are constant and ever-changing, yet the staff continues to provide a safe, pleasant and Nurturing environment for the residents. Every situation, regardless of its nature, is handled with dignity and caring.

"If you are tired of plowing and shoveling snow, check to see if you can buy an apartment at Sentry Hill. I did and found it to be carefree living, with friendly people. I enjoy good food in a nice area of York."

Dear Jeannie,
"As you know, Grayce and I have been residents of Sentry Hill for little more than a month; therefore, we do not have a background from which we can draw a particular incident.
We have, however, enjoyed the positive experience of being introduced to this organization and can only say that we are amazed with the warm and friendly atmosphere that pervades the Inn and the dexterity of you and your associates in the management of Sentry Hill as an exciting home, beautifully managed and a place where every member of the staff and every inhabitant seems to make it their mission to make every resident as happy as possible. We are delighted to be here."

Dear Ms. Rudman,
"My mother, Mary, has been at your fine facility for the past 5 months, and I have noticed a markedly positive change in her condition both physically and mentally since she arrived in late June of this year. Her eating habits since she has been at Sentry Hill have never been better in all the years I have known her. She has never eaten breakfast outside of coffee and toast in all the years I have know her, now she looks forward to each and every meal. She is always remarking to me how good the food is, how nice the facilities are, and how outstanding are each and every member of the staff she comes in contact with.
I too must agree with her on all her observations. I am very impressed with the professionalism of the staff and administration at Sentry Hill. The activities and the twenty-four hour attention to detail at your facility definitely are a benchmark for others to achieve. I am impressed at the extensive monthly activities for the residents.
I sincerely appreciate all the help you have given me along with all of your staff. Everyone has always been open, helpful and answered any questions I may have had.
You have made the difficult task of placing my mother into a health care facility a near painless experience for both my mother and me. I am assured that everyday her needs and well being are looked after and she will continue to be active, connected socially and she will greet each day with a positive outlook.
Thank you again for all your help and for the excellent services you provide. I cannot say enough good things about sentry Hill. The overall experience has been an excellent one."
Respectfully yours.

Dear Staff at Sentry Hill, Mr. Ward Hand, Owner, York Harbor Health Care and Jeannie Rudman, Director of Admissions.
"It is incredibly difficult to put into words how much I appreciate the care given to my husband, Michael, during the time he was in the day care program and more recently, his residency in the Browning Lane unit at the York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill.
The day care program that Michael attended for 2-3 days a week for nearly a year was so beneficial for him, as well as for me. Leaving him in the care of your therapeutic recreation specialists, Bob and Justin, gave me a sense of security, safety and loving care for him. During those months of the day care program, MIchael began to form a great and wonderful bond with Bob and Justin. |
Upon Michael's entering the Browning Lane unit as a resident, I again felt the loving care that all of the staff showed towards all of the residents as well as Michael. The staff that works directly with the residents in the Browning Lane unit is superb as well as other staff that works throughout the Sentry Hill facility. They are constantly working to make the residents more comfortable, safe and loved. It was such a comfort to me and to family members to observe handholding, many hugs and words of encouragement made by the staff to the residents. It was always with gentle voices, always courteous and always respectful to all of the residents. Any observer can see the love that the staff has for all of the residents. Everyone from the owner right down to the food service department, nurses, CNA's, and volunteers can be seen speaking to each and every resident with dignity and caring.
I would like to be specific with names, but I am afraid that I would inadvertently leave out someone. I will be forever grateful to each and every one of you that touched Michael's life while at York Harbor Health Care at Sentry Hill.
And finally, thank all of you that were working the day Michael passed away. You allowed him his dignity and gave your love to him and to us, his family. Thank you.
Love."

Dear Ward,
"I wanted to tell you without more delay how much - very much - I appreciate all you've done for me from my first day at Sentry Hill until the last. The nights in the guest suite saved Katie and me from collapsing. It was so quite, clean and peaceful, in addition to the convenience.
Even though my time there was short, it was such a privilege to have had it and to solve so many existing situations at the time.
Your staff is tops in every way, every department, so gracious, knowledgeable and helpful. In particular, Jeannie Rudman was especially supportive, always there for me, never impatient. She is a valuable asset to Sentry Hill. It was so pleasant to have a cheerful smile and a nice comment from Joan Ritterback each time I passed the desk. She, Glenice, Georgette and Jeanine make a great first impression for new residents and the general public. I was always hearing compliments about them.
Maintenance and housekeeping were wonderful, always solving my problems with great attitudes! Special thanks to Warren and Terry. I broke their backs with all the boxes they hauled to the 3rd floor. Jan does his huge job with timeless enthusiasm, ad to Hank, Melissa and Nancy for keeping me neat and tidy, and to Darryl for being Darryl. My times in the dining room were always 5 stars. The wait staff so attractive and competent and the parties were fabulous. Kathy and Amy measured up in every way and added so much to my life there.
So many others, and I always looked forward to a quick chat and their smiles, Sally, Marie, Moe, Linda, Dee Dee, Athina, Lorraine, Kerrie, surely I've forgotten someone but I will be eternally grateful for the very special experience of living at Sentry Hill.
My best wishes to you and Venise, Bill and Joe. Your concept of senior life is extraordinary!
Sincerely, "

Dear Sentry Hill Staff,
"I recently made a 17-day trip to Maine to visit my father, Delbert. As you know, he is a resident of your Kensington nursing care facility. During this period, I visited Dad for 15 of the 17 days, usually spending 3-6 hours with him. This provided me with quite a few opportunities to talk to your staff and to observe the quality of care that Dad is receiving.
The people on your staff are the most understanding, compassionate, professional and hard-working group that it has ever been my pleasure to meet. The patient always comes first with them. That is only a slogan at many organizations, but it is the way the people at Sentry Hill actually do their job with all of your patients. You should be very proud of them, and you should also give yourself a good pat on the back. Such work habits and attitudes that your people exhibit must have been encouraged and supported by you.
Furthermore, their kindness did not end with my dad, their actual patient, but it was also extended to me. My showing up there every day for two weeks and staying for several hours each day could easily have led to my being viewed as somewhat of a nuisance that had to be tolerated. Instead, your staff, from nursing to food workers was invariably solicitous of my needs and readily complied with all requests which I made. I also discovered that I had something to learn about compassion from your staff. A couple of times I became frustrated with what I perceived as a lack of cooperation from Dad and snapped at him a bit. On one occasion, Angie was nearby and simply stepped in and talked with him in an ever so loving manner. Observing her, I felt very contrite and deservedly so.
It is a great comfort for me to know that Dad is receiving the kind of care that you and your staff are providing him at Sentry Hill, especially as I live more then 3,000 miles away and I thank you all deeply for doing so.
Very sincerely, "

Dear Staff,
"In the middle of October, Helen S. of Kittery became a resident in assisted living at Sentry Hill in York Harbor . She dies there on November 14. Although her stay was brief, she considered Sentry Hill her home. Having spent many hours with my Aunt Helen during the past month, I cannot say enough about the facility, from the well-designed tastefully decorated complex, inside and out, to the entire staff of management, nurses, aides, and support services.
The "extended family" philosophy was evident the moment I walked into the main lobby for the first time, and that feeling was ever present. Helen could not have spent the final weeks of her life in a lovelier place. She was treated with kindness, love and respect by everyone, and she received the best of care from a competent, dedicated nursing staff. Our deepest gratitude and appreciation to those of you who crossed her path. Sentry Hill should serve as a model for elderly housing facilities.
Sincerely, "

To Jeannie, Amy and nursing staff,
"My father was admitted to Sentry Hill in June, 1999. Thanks to all of you, his final four years of life on this earth were so very much better because of your affection, devotion, professionalism and just plain hard work. I am deeply grateful to all of you. Thank you so very much.
Dad was an easy person to get along with. He was very non-judgemental, and he rarely, if ever, spoke ill of anyone. He much preferred to speak with a sense of humor. I believe these traits endeared him to most of you, and you reciprocated with genuine affection for him. He perceived this affection, and I believe it enhanced his daily life more than you may have realized. I also realize that many of you share my sorrow that he is no longer with us.
I found the above traits to be prevalent throughout Sentry Hill, from management right on down through the CNAs, nurses, kitchen workers, laundry, etc. This is indicative of excellent management and excellent staff. You have every right to be proud of your company and proud of your part in it. Once again from our family, thank you very much.
Warmest regards, "
